I have noticed something about Tribe Cool Crew. When this show has a plot relevant episode, it hits the mark and is awesome. When it’s a filler episode…not so much. These two weeks perfectly explain what i’m talking about. So let me just go ahead and explain.

So episode 17 starts off with the gang going to the second round of Dance Road. When they get there they realize they won’t be performing against the same people as last time as each of those teams got their own theme.

They are however competing against the twins from the earlier episode. And remember how I said it was weird having a sniper in last episode? Yeah well how about having to dance against robots programmed with Jey’s moves? Yeah. I was raising my eyebrow too.

The cake may be a lie, but the funky phresh dance moves are all too real

After a few people go up it’s Tribe Cool’s turn, and honestly, I really liked their dance, even more than the first one.

Following their performance the twins from earlier do their own dance, and honestly, I actually really liked their dance as well. The theme was fighting, and they managed to take that topic and make it fun to watch.

Following their performance they announce the three groups moving on to the next round, and, thank goodness, Tribe Cool Crew is one of them.

They receive their next pin and learn that the next theme of round 3 will be “Precision”

and that’s basically where the episode ends.

The next episode….isn’t as exciting.

It starts off with Kanon and Haneru involved in a fight. Why are they fighting you may ask? Because both think their own brand of snacks is better and neither will back down.

Yeah..that’s…that’s pretty much the plot of this episode. It’s a perfect example of a filler episode.

At first they just argue about it. Then Yuzuru and Mizuki realize that they are on opposing sides as well and THEY begin to argue.

Da Fuck you say about Squidies?
Da Fuck you say about Squidles?

Haneru and Kanon both go to their parents and friends respectively and they all give them terrible advice about not apologizing because they’re in the right. This sadly prolongs the fight until Master T shows up and basically tells Haneru that fighting is stupid and they need to make up. Which I agree with.

Damn Straight Master T
Damn Straight Master T

They make up and all is right with the world. End of episode.

So here’s the breakdown. I really had a blast with episode 17. I enjoyed all the dances that were put onstage, even the robots, while cheesy were still a fun thing to watch.

It was very interesting to see them do a dance that wasn’t the same dance they’ve been doing for around 8 episodes and I really enjoyed this dance even more. And now, with a new theme, i’m very excited to see what they come up with.

As we’re getting further into dance road we are already coming up upon round 3 and we’re going to run out of throw away dance teams pretty soon and have to have close battles against pre-established rivals.

Every episode that involves dance road gets me hooked in and it reminds me why I watch Tribe Cool Crew.

…. THEN there’s episode 18. The reason I FORGET why i’m watching Tribe Cool Crew in the first place.

After a great episode involving their competition prowess, being hit with an episode about fighting over snack foods is very underwhelming.

Is it..uh...is it possible just to jump to round 3?
Is it..uh…is it possible just to jump to round 3?

Albeit it’s very underwhelming I will say this. These episodes, while not being particularly epic or attention keeping does do one thing for me. It draws me deeper into understanding these characters. I feel  like I get to know them better, as in, how they act when they’re NOT embarking on an epic dance competition, but just hanging out. And seeing how they act around each other with nothing at stake, it’s kind of fun. It feels….I know this is a weird word to use but “homey”. They kind of feel like a family and it’s nice to see this. I suppose it’s better to know more about characters than too little. And to be fair, there’s no character in this show that I dislike. I like pretty much every one of the main cast so seeing them hang out really isn’t that painful.

When it’s all said and done, this episode COULD be skipped, you wouldn’t miss a damn thing, but there are far worse things you could skip.

Overall, Episode 17 was fantastic and I want to see more of it 8.5/10

while episode 18 was cute, a little frustrating, but overall…okay? 5.5/10
