Spring 2013 Anime Preview2

Welcome to the Spring Anime 2013 Season! I decided to try out another layout (using the grid tables) for once, but we haven’t decided whether we will stick with this concept. It’s far from perfect, but I certainly find it a bit more neater than the previous one.

While Japan in desperate situation, 13 “devil survivors” cut deals with devils to obtain abilities to fight against unknown invaders with only 7 days left until a world catastrophe, you need to make crucial decision to survive…

Team’s Impression:

Eva: Why haven’t I bought the game yet? Why haven’t I bought the game yet? Why haven’t I bought the game yet? Why haven’t I bought the game yet?
Vantage: Now this looks interesting. I don’t know anything about the game, but the PV does make it seem really interesting! Here’s to lots of suspense, thrills and bloody deaths. Oh, and plot twists. Those are pretty important aren’t they.
Linzz: Actually, I tried reading the manga of this (tried only since it was ongoing and only has two chapters that time lol) but I might say that this is rather interesting. The starting rumor was quite a good mystery too.

Tenderfoot: I’m not really feeling it. I’ll probably check out the first episode and go from there.
Kaitou: I want to play this game! I’m busy with Fire Emblem: Awakening, but this is definitely on the watch/play list. The character designs look really good.
Chris: Something tells me I’m going to like this… post-apocalyptic feel with a sci-fi twist, how can I not like it? Plus if it’s anything like the Persona 4 anime I’m going to love it. *UPDATE* After playing about two hours worth of the game I have decided that it is awesome and I am definitely going to watch it!

Second season of Uta no Prince-sama!

Team’s Impression:

Eva: WOOHOO! IT’S FINALLY HERE! WILL THERE BE ACTUAL ROMANCE THIS SEASON OR WHAT? STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT.
No but seriously it’s a hilarious show, though I am curious to see whether it gets a bit more ‘serious’ now that they debuting. I have my doubt though ahaha.
Vantage: Eva’s probably been waiting for this for a long time…
Linzz: No matter how I think season one failed me for that ending and all those freakingly cliffhangers on its romance side, I still love this series for it has good music. Yes, good music.

Tenderfoot: I had serious, serious, serious issues with the first season which I won’t talk about here, but suffice to say I think I’d rather have my eyes burned out with hot coals than watch this.
Kaitou: AWWW YEAHHHHHH!!! I really liked season one, it was a perfect mix of lighthearted craziness and music. I want to see that principal on screen again, and obviously, the guys. :3
Chris: It’s not really my kinda of anime… yeah let’s go with that.

Suisei no Gargantia

Suisei no Gargantia

Animation Company: Production I.G Genres: Sci-Fi

Website

Airing Date: April 16th, 2013 Trailers: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3 (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

The story begins in the distant future in the far reaches of the galaxy. The Human Galactic Alliance has been constantly fighting for its survival against a grotesque race of beings called “Hidiaazu.” During an intense battle, the young lieutenant Redo and his humanoid mobile weapon Chamber are swallowed up into a distortion of time and space. Waking from his artificially induced hibernation, Redo realizes that he has arrived on Earth, the planet on the lost frontier. On this planet that was completely flooded by the seas, people live in fleets of giant ships, salvaging relics from the seas’ depths in order to survive. Redo arrives on one of the fleets called Gargantia. With no knowledge of the planet’s history or culture, he is forced to live alongside Amy, a 15-year-old girl who serves as a messenger aboard the Gargantia fleet. To Redo, who has lived a life where he knows nothing but fighting, these days of peace continue to surprise him.

Team’s Impression:

Eva: Yippee! Sci-fic!!! I am liking the spin of adapting to ‘peaceful days’, but I wouldn’t take it for granted since it’s Gen Urobuchi who is in charge of the script. He always has a way to make a dark twist. Mwhahahahaha….
Vantage: Did I read that right? Days of peace? Ahahahaha not for long, if Urobuchi is producing this. I shall be interested in seeing this peaceful world buckle under the pressure of despair and collapse in on itself. That IS what’s going to happen, right?
Linzz: This is a little too sci-fi for me. I do accept sci-fi series that goes along the line of S;G and R;N though. LOL But will try one episode since I’m pretty much intrigued by Production I.G. and hopefully it doesn’t have any derpy scenes.

Tenderfoot: Color me intrigued. It looks nice, the guy who did the design for The Dominator gun from Psycho-Pass (which I really like) is doing the mecha designs, and the plot sounds like it could go a lot of different places. And, Production I.G. And, Sci-Fi. Sign me up!
Kaitou: Ooo, Production IG. Watching this~ Gen Urobochi or not.
Chris: I really like the art design for this anime and it’s a sci-fi, I like sci-fi’s. Plus the trailer looks awesome but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Animation Company: SUNRISE Genres: Mecha

Airing Date: April 2013 Trailers: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3 (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

New original mecha anime from Sunrise.

Team’s Impression:

Eva: Hm, this is an original SUNRISE production, so I am curious to see where it goes. Hopefully it won’t end up in flames like the majority of mecha series we have been seeing over the past two years produced by SUNRISE… But looking at the staff, I think think can turn out good.
Vantage: This could be good! It’s not a standard school setting or anything (like Sacred Seven was) so I’m hoping that Sunrise’s decision to create a really intricate setting to back the plot is proof that this is worth watching.
Linzz: Yes, I will watch this!  As far as I could remember, I haven’t been let down yet by Sunrise and their original series (since maybe I pick those which interests me quite well) and plus, this is mecha IN sunrise, why not?

Tenderfoot: Eeeehhhhhh, probably not. This is going to sound really stupid, but I cannot stand the weird 3-d rendered robot thing. Computer animation like that just always looks really bad to me.
Kaitou: So vague. I’ll try it- I want another SUNRISE blockbuster like Tiger&Bunny.
Chris: I’ll check it out because it’s being done by Sunrise and because I haven’t watched a mecha anime in a long time… Wait what? There’s school and possibly a romance? Count me in!

Airing Date: April 2013 Trailers: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3 (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Mukoujima Takurou is a lonely teenager who spends his time fishing at the pier and, to his incredible surprise, fishes up Muromi, a mermaid. Muromi first off doesn’t realize she’s a mermaid until she meets Takurou. Not only that, she is incredibly dense and crazy and has a drinking problem to top it off. Now every time Takurou goes fishing, Muromi appears and makes life interesting for him.

Team’s Impression:

Eva: …. So she’s alcoholic mermaid. That explains a lot.
Vantage: Oh dear…I’m aiming for laughs with this one. Let’s go with that.
Linzz: Mermaid?! Did I just read mermaid?! D8 *sees slice of life genre* no. nononononono.

Tenderfoot: Just…what? Why? Whoever came up with this idea was probably the one with a drinking problem.
Kaitou: No fish. There better not be aliens in this show.
Chris: What is this? I mean drunken mermaids aside how will the characters interact? Mermaids stay in water, humans stay on land… what is it going to be an anime about them talking by the pier? Don’t tell me he’ll turn into a mermaid… I’m over thinking this…

Every 30 years, a new princess is chosen from the Hime family to serve the Hayagami. The time has come again, but over these past years, records state not a single female has been born, save for one, the 15 year old Arata. The only problem is, Arata is actually a male! Forced to disguise himself and take the place of the princess candidate until a formal one can be found, he attends the festival only to witness the current princess, Kokuri-hime, murdered, and his own life is forfeit as well, by the hands of the princess’ personal guard, the 12 Shinshou. As he runs for his life, Kannagi of the 12 convinces everyone that Arata is the one who has murdered the princess instead, and now everyone in the Imperial Court is after his head!

Team’s Impression:

Eva: According to friends of mine who are a HUGE fan of this series, this is an adaption that was LONG OVERDUE. I haven’t read the manga, but I am definitely intrigued so I will be watching this for sure. I will give this a shot to blog if no one has read the manga on the team.
Vantage: Hahaha it looks like Magi, except set in what I’m presuming is ancient Japan instead of somewhere Arabian. Well, if it’s shounen it can’t hurt to give it a spin.
Linzz: HAHAHAHAHA CROSSDRESSING PRINCESS!!! Yuu Watase, I hope this one won’t make me cry buckets with exactly or same amount of laughter that I will do on its first few episodes.

Tenderfoot: It has been LITERALLY ages since a Yuu Watase manga has been made into an anime. So I’m kind of excited for that reason (~nostalgia~.) I’ll check it out, even though it looks…a little cheep. Hey, as long as it doesn’t turn into that “Miaka” “Tamahome” shit it can’t be that bad, right?

Kaitou: Yuu Watase, the queen of KILLALLTHECHARACTERSYOULIKE. I stopped reading the manga for this and Genbu Kaiden because I just get really angry with her sometimes (Alice-9 and Imadoki were really good, and my favourite of her work). But I will watch this, she’s really good at stories and characters. Art look gorgeous too.

Eva: This is clearly one of the rare “NOT TO BE TAKEN TOO SERIOUSLY” mecha series. I am definitely interested in covering this, so sign me up!
Vantage: So out of the three mecha ones so far, we have two serious shows and a more light-hearted, school one with this. Sounds legit.

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Elen and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Elen vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

Team’s Impression:

Eva: I am not going to lie. The trailer terrifies me, especially the giants. There’s no way I’ll be able to watch this, too intense and my red flags for potential gore went up. The OST is going to be epic though, that’s for sure. Hahaha…ha….
Vantage: That’s pretty scary, yeah…imagine all the ways you can get eaten alive by a giant. This will definitely be a struggle to avoid letting loose with the manga and just spoiling the entire story for myself.
Linzz: I’m interested so… I’ll watch an episode and see for myself.

Tenderfoot: I’ll be watching this. It looks like it’ll be a fun and crazy ride, with at least some solid animation and a semi-original sounding plot. That’s really all I need.
Kaitou: Possibly one of the most intense (tragedy?) manga I have read in a while. The worst scenarios produce the hardest warriors, and the characters are pretty damn badass. You’re fighting giants with rappel gear and swords, and there’s a giant secret to be revealed. I wonder if they’re going to complete the story, since the  manga is not finished yet. Looking forward to it!
Chris: I absolutely LOVE this manga and I’ve been waiting for an anime adaption since the first volume, I can just tell it’s going to be awesome! Great animation, great plot and awesome plot twists to boot… LOVE.

Vantage: Not really into this.

A teacher gets Hachiman to join the volunteer service club, which happens to have the school’s prettiest girl, Yukinoshita Yukino.

Team’s Impression:

Eva: Honestly I don’t really know what to make out of this. The summary immediately reminded me of OreShura (which I quickly grew to dislike and drop), but hey, it’s Brains Base and it’s a romantic comedy, what reason is there to pass on this?
Vantage: Seems surprisingly similar in setup to OreShura from the Winter season…well, can’t hurt to try it at least.
Linzz: People! We need better synopsis in this because I was like, “AND THEN?!” Until I get a better synopsis and PV, I’ll decide? I’ve seen enough. It has a lot of girlsssss. D8

Tenderfoot: The set-up sounds boring and over-done, but I’ll watch at least the first episode anyway.
Kaitou: School life comedy romance with the most popular girl in the school? Where have I heard that one before…
Chris: It’s a Spring time anime with romance, comedy and schools… basically I need at least one of these to make me feel whole throughout each season… I guess this had better be good! One day, he forgets his copy of Les Fleurs du Mal in the classroom and runs back alone to pick it up. In the classroom, he finds not only his book, but Saeki’s gym uniform. On a mad impulse, he steals it.
Now everyone knows “some pervert” stole Saeki’s uniform, and Kasuga is dying with shame and guilt. Furthermore, the weird, creepy, and friendless girl of the class, Nakamura, saw him take the uniform. Instead of revealing it was him, she recognizes his kindred deviant spirit and uses her knowledge to take control of his life. Will it be possible for Kasuga to get closer to Saeki, despite Nakamura’s meddling and his dark secret? What exactly does Nakamura intend to do with him?

Team’s Impression:

Eva: I couldn’t put my finger on it right away, but the base of the scenario reminded me of how Watashi ni xx Shinasai started out but I am sure this is a MILLION times better so I am definitely going to check this out.
Vantage: It sounds like some sort of romcom setup to begin with, but those psychological and drama tags hint that there could be a lot of angst within as well, like we saw with Kotoura-san from this season. I’ll be interested in seeing how this turns out.
Linzz: This is actually pretty interesting.

Tenderfoot: I feel obligated to watch any anime based on a manga in which one of the main characters straight-up tells her teacher to shut the fuck up in the first chapter. Also, a majority of the staff worked on Mushishi, and I loved that show a whole lot so I’m pretty sold on this (so much so that I’m shot-gunning this baby.)

Tenderfoot: If it has panty shots like a harem, as many boobies as a harem, and as many different girls with different hair colors and standard personality types as a harem, it’s a harem, and no amount of cool epic music and mecha battle stuff is going to change that.
Kaitou: It’s a harem show, albeit a very flashy one. Pass~
Chris: Definitely looked interesting! I’ll check out the first episode… maybe the second as well.

The second season of Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san…

S1 Summary: “Akutabe is a detective who summons devils to solve the troubles of his clients. One day, a low class devil Azazel Atsushi is summoned by Akutabe and is used harshly by him and his assistant Rinko.”

Team’s Impression:

Eva: I was surprised by how much I actually was entertained by this show since its crude humor is usually not my cup of tea. I am hoping that it is going to be longer than… I think it was 10 – 15 minutes per episode for the first season? Either way I’ll definitely be watching this- however I’m not sure whether I’ll blog it or not. It’s a maybe.
Vantage: I haven’t watched the first season…I probably should try it at some point.
Linzz: No, actually no.

Tenderfoot: I haven’t seen the first season and I don’t really have any burning desire to remedy that situation.
Kaitou: OH SHIT, BRING IT ON! I really liked season one, and I never realized season two was coming! Definitely watching~
Chris: That ‘thing’ on the left reminds me of Ichiya from Fairy Tail and he scares me… just saying…

Linzz: I’ve watched Hayate but…. I still do think Sebastian is a better butler so anyway, NO.

Tenderfoot: Ask yourself this world: Do we really need more Hayate no Gotoku? (Here’s a hint: the answer you’re looking for is no.)
Kaitou: Never watched Hayate, so I’ll pass.

Linzz: I’ll try but I’m more concentrated on Maoyuu Maou Yuusha. XD

Tenderfoot: I’ll do it for White Fox. They have yet to let me down.

Vantage: Pass.
Linzz: HAHAHAHA NO NO NONONONONO.

Airing Date: April 2013 Trailers: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3 (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

The second season will focus on The Sisters Arc. Lasting only a single volume in the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novels, it was later expanded greatly in the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun manga. The arc focuses on the ordeals of Mikoto Misaka after discovering the existence of the Radio Noise sisters that are being used in the Level 6 Shift, an experiment where they are killed in order for the highest-ranking Level 5, Accelerator, to achieve Level 6.

Team’s Impression:

Eva: Gah. To Aru Kagaku no Railgun is still on my “Plan to Watch” list, so I can’t watch this yet. ;______;
Vantage: Misaka <3 I love Railgun, guys. We already know what happened in the Sisters Arc though, so…just lots more story depth?
Linzz: Actually, I don’t think this is on my plan and I don’t want to dare alter my schedule now that I’m expected to work after graduation and that… well, in short, no.

Tenderfoot: I’m waaaaaay to lazy to catch up with a bunch of previous shows/seasons.
Kaitou: I’m still working on Season two, they just went too far into the fanservice. Maybe, but really, really tentative. The Railgun is really cool, it’s all the yuri action and sis-com that throws me off.
Chris: Haven’t watched the first season so this is out of the question!

Overall Thoughts

Eva: I think for most part, we are in for a potentially strong season- if the majority of the more serious series are done right.. There are quite a handful of sci-fic/mechas so that should be fun. I am looking forward to Suisei no Gargantia (;w; especially since I had to skip out on Psycho-Pass due to the bloody gore/sobs) UtaPri 2000% (ARE YOU READY?!), RDG: Red Data Girl, Ginga Kikōtai Majestic Prince, Arata Kangatari and DATE A LIVE (though I am a bit concerned about whether fanservice will be prioritized over plot). Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge should be rather… uh interesting I suppose with the whole magical- err, cursed hair.
Vantage: Spring is usually one of the stronger anime seasons, which gives me a positive first impression of many of these shows. I can immediately see potential highlights in Suisei no Gargantia and Shingeki no Kyoujin, while harem shows such as DATE A LIVE still give me hope that there will be a decent plot accompanying the fanservice. Unfortunately,  my real-life priorities will be taking precedence next season (hopefully only for one season), and so I won’t be able to blog as many shows as I’d like to – realistically, I’ll only be up for Oreimo and Railgun in addition to the series that will be carrying over from Winter. I might try to tackle another show if it really interests me, but we’ll see.
Linzz: The ultimate weapon to every shoujo series is in the house! Oh yes, you read this right since as a shoujo fan myself (not that hardcore anymore nowadays anyway), I’m pretty much looking forward to Uta no Prince Sama 2000%! weeeee!!! Although unlike the others, I’m not really after its romance side since I’m sure that it will never have a decent romance – I can feel it and even if it will I would only be just dissatisfied by it (based on what happened on the first season) but if I might be wrong, it’ll be good. I only after the music there anyway. XD There are some good original series listed as well Imma try those and yeah – moe genre never seem to cease fire at all. MUST KILL THOSE ANIMATION STYLES. Where is my cool and badass animation style now?! WHEREREEE??!!!

Tenderfoot: Not a whole lot of stuff this season that’s really calling out for me, which is fine since I really need to cut the amount that I’m watching for my sanities sake. I’m trying to avoid getting burnt out on watching too many shows that I’m only marginally interested in. There are really only 3 in this season that I’m absolutely sure I’m going to be watching; Suisei no Gargantia, Shingekino no Kyoujin, and Aku no Hana (which I’m most excited for.) Other than that, Arata Kangatari, Red Data Girl and Hataraku Maou-sama! look like they could all be maybe not great, but certainly good enough. Since I do believe that Chihayafuru and Magi are the only shows from the winter that I’m watching that will be carrying over to spring, I’m actually looking forward to a more relaxed season where I’m not watching 50 million things.
Kaitou: A solid season, I’m actually really, really happy, and I welcome the Spring season with open arms. There seems to be a lot more original properties that aren’t the run-of-the-mill moe cash grabs. Josei, shonen, and shoujo are up to my standards. I probably won’t have time to watch everything I want to at the beginning of the season, but I will definitely be marathoning the shows I miss out on. Shingeki no Kyoujin‘s PV was really solid, and with Production I.G. (I like to pretend Guilty Crown never happened, despite the impressive animation) behind it, I feel I can have faith in the adaptation. The rest are going be my junkfood anime, and that includes things like Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san II, Karneval, and of course, UtaPri 2000%.
Chris: Anybody else notice the abundance of mecha anime? Is it a seasonal thing? Do people get hyped for robots killing robots when the snow recedes? I’m just saying, I mean, (a part from Robotics;Notes) there wasn’t a single mecha anime in the winter season but now all of a sudden there are… one, two, three, THREE mecha anime coming out… and I like it! Where have you been all winter mecha anime? I missed you… anyway the anime that I most looking forward to is Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyoujin). I’ve been waiting since the first volume for this and now it’s finally here. Thank you God. Oreimo’s second season looks awesome but I’m not going to go too much into that… The romance anime look awesome! Gotta love a bit of romance… Oh! And pretty much every series this season looks really well animated! A feast for the eyes, I think. It’s only dawning on me now how much anime I have to watch this anime season… I’m seeing a lot of late nights…

I am looking forward to To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san, Photo Kano, Yuyushiki, and RDG: Red Data Girl. Looks like a diverse and interesting season compared to the heavily moe centered one currently going on.

  2. il-Palazzo

Crime Edge’s manga is pretty decent. I’d give it a try.

I usually update as the PVs come out, but thank you for providing the link I will add that now.

to be honest im mainly looking forward to uta pri 2000% (when she didnt get a kiss from anyone in the first season i was ragin especially when one of them said ‘I love.. your music’ lol) anyway i was waiting for april to watch this~ oh and karneval~ oh and maybe RDG: Red Data Girl… since the others school based and slice’s of lifes are too boring :/ oh and that 1 ecchi one… -picks up skyrim- never :3
-I heard there is going to be a diabolik lovers anime :O and a brothers conflict one :OO-

    1. Eva

“I love… YOUR MUSIC.” < That was major trolling. MAJOR, and we all knew it was going to happened yet it still killed us. I genuinely hope that this season they will actually be a bit more serious with the romance and actually GIVE US SOME not tease us. /SOBS RDG should be good since it's by P.A. WORKS, they always have promising projects. There are already two pre-aired episodes, but I am still waiting for the official release. Yup two more otome adaptions are coming soon. The Brothers Conflict might be coming out this summer. Diabolik lovers with either be in the summer as well or the fall. :3

  4. Magicflier

For DATE A LIVE, i’m guessing there is no harem genre labeled is because it’s not going to actually be one? Either that or the action (shounen) and romance between the leads overpowers the harem.genre.
